She gave a special course in the Hague Academy of International Law on “The Role of Judicial Procedures in the Process of the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes,” published in the Recueil des cours, Vol. 346 (2009), pp. 9-473, and provided lectures in the Audio-visual Library of the United Nations. Prof. Kawano was a member of the Executive Board of the Japanese Association of International Law (2003-2012) and a member of the Executive Board of the following academic associations: the Japanese Association of World Law (2004-present), the Japanese Association of International Economic Law (2025-present), l’Association internationale du droit de la mer (2014-present), and the Japan Society of Ocean Policy (2014-present). She has been the President of the Japanese Association of International Law since May 2026.
Prof. Kawano has worked with ministries of Japan as a member of various committees, including the Advisory Group on State Responsibility, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1995-2001), the Consultative Committee on Maritime Affairs, Ministry of Land and Transport (2007-2025, Chairperson (2015-2025)), Councilor of the Headquarters for Ocean Policy of the Government of Japan (2012-2016), the Council on Customs, Tariff, Foreign Exchange and Other Transactions, Ministry of Finance (2015-present), the Committee for Ocean Development, the Council for Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (2021-present)
