Kentaro Nishimoto

Kentaro NISHIMOTO is Professor of International Law at the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, the University of Tokyo. He received his Ph.D. in Law from the University of Tokyo in 2011. Before joining the University of Tokyo, he was an Associate Professor (2012–2019) and then a Professor (2019–2026) at the Graduate School of Law, Tohoku University, with a cross-appointment as Professor at the National Institute of Polar Research (2020–2025). His research has focused on the international law of the sea, including its history, the sustainable development of ocean resources, and the settlement of maritime disputes. His ongoing research projects focus primarily on the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement), the legal aspects of Arctic ocean governance, and the settlement of maritime disputes in Asia. He has advised the government of Japan in various capacities, including as an advisor to the Japanese delegation to the BBNJ Intergovernmental Conference.
