Orestis Schinas
Dr.-Ing. Orestis Schinas is Assoc. Professor of Ship Finance at the Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport of the University of the Aegean. His academic and professional work focuses on maritime finance, shipping policy and regulation, sustainable maritime transport, and the interaction between regulatory frameworks and commercial decision-making.
He has extensive international experience in maritime governance and has served as Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO). His work has involved international maritime regulation, flag-State governance, ship registration, maritime safety and security, environmental policy, and the financing of shipping and maritime infrastructure.
Alongside his academic activities, he is a founder of HHX.blue GmbH, where he contributes to maritime financial structuring, regulatory and policy analysis, and data-driven decision-support solutions for shipping and maritime projects.
His recent research includes the governance and economic implications of open ship registries, beneficial ownership and transparency, sanctions and enforcement risks, maritime decarbonisation, and the financing of emerging maritime technologies. A recurring focus of his work is the interface between public regulation and the practical responses of shipowners, financiers, insurers and other market participants.
