Thomas Nektarios Papanastasiou

Thomas Nektarios Papanastasiou is Associate Professor of Public International Law at the School of Law, UNIC Athens – University of Nicosia. His research focuses on international investment law, energy law and human rights, with particular emphasis on the protection of offshore energy infrastructure and the allocation of geopolitical risk.

He holds a PhD specialising in International Investment Law and an MA in International Relations from Waseda University, Japan, where he studied as a Japanese Government (MEXT) scholar. He also holds an LL.M. in Civil Procedure and an LL.B. from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

He is co-author of International Investment, Political Risk, and Dispute Resolution: A Practitioner’s Guide (Oxford University Press, 2020) and has published widely on international law. His professional experience includes work with the World Bank, the OECD, JICA and Japanese research institutions. He has also contributed legal expertise for the Republic of Cyprus to the UNIDROIT–ICC project on international investment contracts.

He is a member of the Athens Bar Association, Treasurer of the Hellenic Society of International Law and International Relations, and Vice President of the Cyprus–Japan Friendship Association.
