Markos Karavias

Markos Karavias is an Assistant Professor in Public International Law at the Department of International and European Studies of the University of Piraeus and a Member of the Athens Bar Association.

Between 2018 and 2021, he served as the Governor of the Greek Asylum Service, and in this capacity represented Greece on the Management Board of EUAA. From 2021 until 2023, he served in the Cabinet of the Minister of Migration and Asylum of Greece, tasked with coordinating the Greek position in the context of the negotiations on the new Pact on Migration and Asylum. Since 2023, he has provided technical support and migration policy advice to national administrations in the context of the Mediterranean Migration and Asylum Policy Hub.

He has been instructed in migration and human rights cases, notably in Chowdury and others v. Greece before the European Court of Human Rights.

Markos studied law at the Universities of Athens and Oxford. In 2011, he received his D.Phil. in International Law from the Law Faculty of the University of Oxford. He has taught international law at the Law Faculties of the Universities of Amsterdam and Utrecht.
