Akrita Kaur
Akrita Kaur is a Project Associate (GOI Fellow) at the World Maritime University-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (WMU-GOI), where she contributes to the Future Ocean and BBNJ Clinic Programmes through research and programme operations. She is also a Ph.D. Candidate in Law at Panjab University, Chandigarh, India, where her doctoral research examines the legal regime for combating marine pollution in the Indian Ocean, with a particular focus on marine environmental protection and ocean governance.
Her research interests centre on the law of the sea, marine conservation, climate law and international environmental law, with particular interests in marine pollution and plastic pollution, climate change and maritime activities, and the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement. Her recent research and academic work has examined maritime liability and carbon capture and storage at sea, climate risks associated with shadow fleets and obsolete vessels, marine plastic pollution governance, and benefit-sharing in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
Prior to joining WMU-GOI, Akrita served as a Research Assistant to Judge Kriangsak Kittichaisaree of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) and as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Law. She has participated in and contributed to international conferences, expert workshops and academic initiatives on oceans law and policy, maritime governance, marine environmental protection and the BBNJ Agreement
